It's funny that after watching a few episode of a food series I wasn't really shocked about the information. As any educated person I can read and figure out what's in a package. And of course watching dr. Oz also helps in knowing what's healthy and what's not.
The thing is that I let my mom watched the series 'Rip of Britain: Food' and she was kind of shocked. I have to say I am very lucky when it comes to eating. A lot of stuff that I eat are non-prepared food. I don't like to eat microwave meals or any pre-made salad, it just doesn't taste right.
My mom was shocked that in cornflakes there's so many sugar. I was like duh, why do you think I never eat/buy cornflakes. I mean, I know bread contains a lot of salt cause the manufacture put a lot on it so the loaf comes out of the machine easily. My siblings take cornflakes/cruesli as breakfast in the weekend. I am very fortunate that while growing up my breakfast routine never contains cornflakes so I could never become addicted to it's sugary flavor.
Juice is something I don't frequently buy but I do make an exception for the cranberry juice when it's on sale. Like mango juice contains more apple juice and banana pulp. My mother didn't liked what she heard at all. Like I have been buying that kind of crap. I on the other hand always like to know whats in a package so I knew this already. I even told her that bottled orange juice isn't only just orange juice it contains way more things in it that you and I never seen before. The last time we went to a shop she asked me to read the content and was reluctant to buy.
Another thing about chicken soup that doesn't contain chicken. I was laughing about it but there was a time I enjoyed drinking a instant cup-a-soup. Honestly, it was always salty but it was the trend and I didn't know better. I know that a powdered sachet can't contain any chicken and I didn't expect any. For those that did expect chicken in their can soup, I feel with you but it's a marketing trick.
A thing I never liked is the 'light' label. I never like the taste of diet or light products. I did tried colacola-light and I find it disgusting. Coke itself is super sweet but light is downright torture. People tend to think if it's light you can eat more of it but eventually when you take your second portion the value of energy you take in, is way more than an intake of one 'non-light' portion. And at a young age I found labeling food as 'light and diet' a marketing trick that all the ladies like to fall for.
In a sense I wasn't really effected by the show but it did spiked some questions for my relatives and what they buy. At a young age I already knew that candy wasn't good for me but it taste great and in my teenage years I learned to develop my taste pallet thanks to the mild cooking from home.
I am very happy that I showed this program to my family and friends so they could be a bit more conscious about their intake of food. You can watched 'Rip of Britain: Food' on BBC with Hola Unblocker if your not located in Britain. And perhaps you will make your own list of things that you won't buy anymore.
