Perhaps it happens to you too. I went to the supermarket and forgot where I parked my bike. It's just so crazy how within 5 minutes I forgot. I felt really stupid because I almost dialed the alarm number. My bike was in front of the store I went in to buy the item on sale.
The thing is that at home there are places that I don't frequently search through and eventually forgot what's been laying in that specific place. For example last year I cleared out the shoe rack and put them in boxes in the basement. In the spring I like to change my choice of shoes and was planning to get my loafers out. It took me a few guesses before I got the right box in hand.
What's so dangerous about forgotten things is that I would buy a new similar product to replace it. I am fortunate enough that this time I knew that I wouldn't trow away a good fitting pair of quality shoe. But what happens with things I need and have but can't find.
Most of the time I try to remember by going through all the places where it usually lays. If that doesn't help I try thinking about wherefore I use the object and did I lend it out. Most of the time I'll find what I need. For those time I don't find it yet, I give myself a week time to find it before buying something to replace it. Cause sometimes that what you need pops up when you least expect it.
My family for example don't know that I am actively trying to get rid of excess stuff or that I am an minimalist. They do see it by the things I donate or trash can that it's getting fuller. The house is also less stuffed and that's what they see. A lot of forgotten stuff did surface in my quest to minimalism and it was all usable but not to us anymore.
